They spell it Vinci and pronounce it Vinchy; foreigners always spell better than they pronounce.
Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad, ch. 19
The tests below constitute a series designed to assess your ability to spell English words correctly when these words are misspelled according to their actual pronunciations.
For example, on such a test the word "talk" would be presented as "tohk", reflecting its pronunciation, which does not include an "l" sound.
Each test has 10 items. In each item, you will be given an English word that is spelled according to its pronunciation. You will also be given an input box in which you should type your answer. The correct answer is the correct spelling of the word presented in the item.
These tests are an assessment of the ability to decode the pronunciation of a written word when that word is misspelled to better reflect its actual sounds when spoken, the ability to recognize English words, and the ability to spell English words. These tests require a ready understanding of the pronunciation of English words as well as the ability to spell English words correctly.
The item type found in these tests is similar to some items on professional intelligence tests, but this series of tests was actually inspired by a spelling test that does not seem to have been produced as a professional intelligence test.
Information about this spelling test (and the 20 most difficult words, "grotesquely misspelled") can be found in Esquire magazine, April 1967, "A Spelling Test Beyond All Belief", freely accessible here.
